Community Transport consists of two sections - Community
Wheels and Community Cars.
Community Wheels
From one minibus at the launch of the service in 1981, Community
Wheels now has 9 vehicles. For ease of access of all groups, these
are kept in six different locations in Dacorum. These are 12 to
16 passenger vehicles; 8 are equipped with tail lifts and removable
seats so that wheelchairs can be accommodated.
The minibuses can be hired by groups which are affiliated to Community
Action Dacorum with members in Dacorum, and are concerned with the
welfare of elderly, disabled and young people. Currently there are
over 400 groups registered. Each group is asked if they can provide
their own experienced volunteer driver, but a volunteer driver can
usually be recruited if needed.
As a part of the responsible position Community Transport takes
regarding the driving of the Community Wheels minibuses, a driver
assessor is employed. We can assess drivers for the Hertfordshire
County Council minibus certificate.
To arrange for an assessment please telephone Community Transport
on 01442 - 253935.
Hire charges are kept as low as possible and to ensure sufficient
income to support the service, local businesses have “adopted”
vehicles.
Current minibus sponsors are:
- Box Moor Trust
- Epson
- Hemel Hempstead Round Table
- Parker-Hannifin
- Sir Robert McAlpine
- Dacorum Community Trust
- William Sutton Housing Association
- Hemel Hempstead Day Centre
Community Wheels also provides several timetabled bus services
throughout Dacorum using a 16-seater minibus.
Alternate Thursdays: Route 208
Linking Trowley / Flamstead / Markyate / Apsley and Potten End
with Hemel Hempstead Market.
Every Friday: Route 207
Linking Long Marston and Wigginton with Tring and Hemel Hempstead
Markets.
Alternate Sundays Route 212 Two journeys - a.m and p.m
To Woodwells Cemetery in Hemel Hempstead
All these routes are driven by volunteers and passengers pay a
normal or concessionary fare. These services have been made possible
by the generous support of the Hertfordshire County Council and
Dacorum Borough Council.
Community Cars
A car scheme for individuals who have difficulty using public transport.
Volunteer drivers in their own cars will take passengers on pre
booked journeys. These drivers are paid a mileage rate. A realistic
charge to the client is agreed at the time of booking based on mileage
and can be paid in cash/cheque or Dacorum Travel Vouchers. A discount
is given to Dacorum Card holders.
